Mort’s Freshfields represented in Red Knights
The law firm in which former Newcastle United chairman Chris Mort holds a senior position, is reportedly represented in a consortium interested in buying Manchester United.
According to reports, London-based Freshfields is among the firms represented on a high-profile board – dubbed the ‘Red Knights’ – which aims to take control of the football club current owner Malcolm Glazer.
It is understood that Freshfields’ corporate head Mark Rawlinson is a key member of the team which met at Freshfields’ offices this week to discuss the possible acquisition.
Chris Mort, who served as executive chairman of NUFC between 2007 and 2008 – is a partner in the firm’s corporate division, although it remains to be seen whether his expertise in football finance will be tapped into during the takeover bid.
Other members of the Red Knights group include Keith Harris, the chairman of investment bank Seymour Pierce who was enlisted by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley to flush out a buyer for the club in late 2008.
