New jobs at dairy
New jobs have been created at a Tyneside dairy, less than a year after it was forced to close, leaving 300 people out of work.
Independent chain Medina Dairy acquired the Dairy Farmers of Britain’s Blaydon depot after the co-operative went into receivership.
Gary White, from Medina Dairy, told the BBC: “As we go through the year and hope to win more business then we will be recruiting an additional 50 workers, taking the total up to 100.
“I think that’s really good news in a recession-hit area.”
He added: “This is the last remaining large dairy in this region.
“All the milk for major multiples, supermarkets and bigger customers are being transported up from as far afield as Yorkshire.
“So it is really important that a dairy of this size and importance is brought back to life.”
