Green technology creates 200 jobs
A £200m surge in orders for green technology will see a North East engineering firm create 200 new jobs and safeguard a further 200.
County Durham-based GT Group expects to more than double its turnover to £55m in the next five years on the back of huge demand for its engine emissions control system.
The system has taken 10 years to achieve global recognition and is now being sold as far afield as Russia, Japan, the US and Brazil.
International manufacturers are flocking to the Peterlee firm for the new exhaust and thermal control technology for their next generation of engines.
The is able to control emissions and improve the efficiency and cleanliness of engines to meet tough international regulations. Chairman Geoff Turnbull said the surge in orders and subsequent growth of the company would have a major knock on effect on GT’s North East supply chain.
He said: “The companies we use on a daily basis will see the benefit of our growth and we are always trying to work with companies in the North East and they will see the benefit of the orders.”
He said the company’s turnover had dipped by around £4m to £19m during the recession but this year would climb back up to £21m.
“With the EU and international governments imposing tough regulations on transport emissions, vehicle manufacturers around the world are sourcing new technologies to deliver improved vehicle performance and environmental sustainability.
“We have now achieved a massive £200m of forward sales for these products after years of sustained investment in research and development.”
One North East is contributing £2m over the next three years in support of GT Group’s £10m Capital Investment and R&D programmes.
