Gateway to China

A trip to China has paved the way for a string of new deals for a Tyneside firm.

Mineral & Chemical Services signed up to take part in the latest Market Visit to China, organised by UK Trade & Investment, in a bid to explore opportunities for its processed minerals and chemical products which cater for a wide range of industries from aerospace, refractory, paints and surface coatings.

Launched in 2005, the Wallsend firm already exports around the world including Europe, the Middle East and China but was keen to develop its potential in China further.

Managing director Patrick Hegarty, said: “As a result of the visit, we secured an order worth more than US$55,000 and are now looking to appoint a representative in Shanghai and expect total sales to this Chinese customer to be around US$400,000 over the next 12 months. We are also targeting about ten other quality customers of a similar size in China.”

Ron Seymour, one of UK Trade & Investment’s International trade advisers, worked with the company to help identify the best means to tackle the market and specialist support was provided by Dr Zhengming Yang, UK Trade & Investment’s China Business Development Manager.

Dr Yang said: “Mineral & Chemical Services was among several companies who joined our market visits to China in 2009 and we’re delighted the experience has proved so valuable to the company. The feedback we’ve had from other delegates has also been incredibly positive and reinforces the fact that there are opportunities for North East firms in this market.”
