Santander crosses the river

Global banking group Santander has relocated its corporate banking division across the Tyne to landmark new premises quadruple the size of its former offices.

Santander has moved its 15 staff, formerly based at Rotterdam House on Newcastle’s Quayside, into the new Baltic Place office development on the Gateshead side.

Santander has previously revealed that its strategy is to build its market share within the North East’s corporate banking market by building long term relationships with its corporate and commercial customers.

And it says its new premises will enable it to double the size of its corporate banking arm.

Santander regional director Craig Iley said: “We are investing heavily in the region, to help us achieve our ambition of becoming the bank of choice for businesses.

“Baltic Place has been finished to a very high standard, but what has been an added benefit is that, during the fit-out phase, we were able to really customise the space with a purpose built boardroom and customer interview areas.

“Our new offices are considerably larger of our former premises and with additional new appointments likely in the near future, this move allows for further recruitment.”

It has taken a 10 year lease on 4,200 sq ft on ninth floor of the West tower – four times the size of its former premises.

The bank’s team will join the 200 staff of marine insurer North of England P&I, who became the first tenants to move into the twin buildings next door to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art earlier in the year.

Robertson director Stuart Hopley said: “We are thrilled that a big name like Santander has chosen Baltic Place as the right development to grow its presence in the region.”

The agents behind the scheme are the Newcastle offices of agents DTZ and GVA Grimley and London agent Jones Lang LaSalle.
