Northumberland prepares for tourist rush

Tourism centres in Northumberland will re-open their doors to sightseers this Easter weekend after a six-figure project was carried out to put them back on the map.

Tourism information centres in Berwick, Seahouses and Alnwick have been re-designed to feature images of key attractions in the area and changes to flooring, lighting and new graphics have been carried out to draw in the punters this season.

The project is part of the Market Town Welcome, which has been set up to help isolated rural market towns achieve their potential as tourism destinations in the region.

Coun Isabel Hunter, executive member for culture at Northumberland County Council, said: “It is great to see this re-development of key tourist information centres complete.

“I am sure that visitors over Easter and coming holiday periods will find them attractive to visit and provide them with all the information they need.”

Each centre will reopen on Good Friday to cater for the influx of seasonal trippers and an opening event will be held during the coming weeks to showcase the centres to businesses and important guests.

Giles Ingram, executive director of Northumberland Tourism, added: “We love to know what local people think of these centres.

“We are hugely proud of Northumberland and we hope that through the use of great photos and new videos we can inspire visitors and locals to see more of the county.”
