Smith dominates government contract
Electric vehicle maker Tanfield has confirmed that it is supplying 67% of the electric vans needed to meet a £20m government plan to put more green vehicles on UK roads.
Tanfield’s subsidiary Smith Electric Vehicles, based in Washington, is supplying more than two thirds of the electric vans ordered by the Department for Transport’s Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme (LCVPP).
The £20m project was announced in 2007 to stimulate public procurement of electric and hybrid commercial vehicles (electric vans).
LCVPP Phase One provides a subsidy to public sector bodies, to encourage them to buy and assess small scale fleets of low carbon vans.
Smith is providing more than double the amount supplied by the other two participating electric van makers.
