Safety first for Draeger
A SAFETY equipment firm has offset the fallout from decline in the construction and chemicals industries by boosting its sales into the fire-fighting market and oil and gas sector.
Northumberland firm Draeger Safety UK fought off tough conditions in 2009 to record a £2m rise in turnover to £70m in the year ending December 30.
The Blyth-based company, which employs around 400 people, saw its profit dip by £1m on the previous year to £6m during the period.
Looking forward, the firm said: “While we recognise that the economic climate has significantly deteriorated and that the competition can only increase, we remain confident that we are well placed to meet our future targets.”
As well as designing and manufacturing respiratory protection equipment, the firm also produces gas detection technology.
Despite being hit by the downturn in a number of key industries during the tough economic period, the company managed to grow its turnover thanks to success with products sold into fire fighting markets and flame and gas detection systems used in the oil and gas industry.
