Business park goes walkies

STAFF AT A NORTH TYNESIDE business park are stepping out towards a greener lifestyle by celebrating National Walk to Work Week with friends from Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter.

Quorum Business Park, based in Benton, has teamed up with the Benton Lane-based animal rescue charity to encourage its employees to walk dogs during their lunch break, contributing towards the national aim of walking 25,000 miles – the distance around the equator.

As well as encouraging staff to walk into work for a week, Quorum tenants, including Convergys and National Grid, will also train to be ‘walk leaders’ and guide their own walks around the area.

Quorum commuter centre manager Laura Kerry said: “Walk to Work Week is an annual reminder that walking all or part of our work commute is fun, green and healthy and can be slotted into even the busiest lives.

“In celebration of the week, we are encouraging people who work within Quorum to get involved in one of the fun activities we have planned and record the number of miles they have walked.

“With latest figures showing that 61% of us Brits are overweight, Quorum wants to lead the way in the North East and show that by walking to or from work, or even by taking a lunchtime stroll, we can increase our fitness levels and meet the Government’s recommended level of daily activity to transform health.

As part of national Walk to Work Week, businesses, organisations and individuals across the country are being encouraged to take to the streets and register their miles on the National Walk to Work Week website, which will record how far the nation gets to walking around the Equator.
