Computers from City Contact Centre Shipped to Charities in Third World Countries

Schools and hospitals across a number of third world countries, are set to receive a host of computer monitors from a local contact centre and fulfilment specialist.

Spark Response has donated 191 computer monitors to the charity, ComuterAid, which will deliver the equipment to deserving causes across Africa and South America.

The donation is a result of Spark’s continued investment in improving its facilities at its Gateshead site. The company purchased new monitors in order to enhance energy efficiency but rather than simply disposing of the old equipment it contacted ComputerAid to offer the monitors to the charity.

Spark then contacted global logistics expert Port of Tyne to coordinate the shipping of the monitors to London, where they will be refurbished by the charity before being shipped overseas. Port of Tyne were delighted to be involved and immediately offered to transport the equipment free of charge.

Peter Slee, Managing Director at Spark Response, says: “Following a significant drive to be more environmentally aware, we launched a programme called Project Focus which is designed to ensure that we meet stringent green targets on all levels of our environmental policy and ISO 14001 accreditation. Upgrading our IT equipment to ensure greater energy efficiency was a pivotal element of Project Focus for 2010. We were determined to recycle the old equipment in a socially-aware manner and sought a worthy cause that would benefit from the donation. ComputerAid was an obvious choice as it has a proven track record in putting disused equipment to good use in the UK and further afield.

“We were thrilled that Port of Tyne offered to partner with us on this project and coordinate the delivery of the equipment to ComputerAid. We have a longstanding relationship with the Port as it provides our business with a 25 per cent storage expansion facility during peak seasons. It’s great to be able to combine our environmental and social responsibility efforts.

“We hope that the monitors make a real difference to the communities that receive them and would encourage other businesses with disused IT equipment to contact the charity.”
