Conference brings cash boost
HEALTH researchers and practitioners from across the world are expected to inject £700,000 into the regional economy as they arrive on Tyneside this week for a major international conference.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Annual International Nursing Research Conference -which starts tomorrow at The Sage Gateshead - is expected to attract up to 500 nurses and practitioners from Europe, USA, Israel, Hong Kong and New Zealand to discuss the latest research, developments and advancements.
International Nurses Day on May 12 will be celebrated during the conference in memory of the work of Florence Nightingale, with the meeting also marking the centenary of her death in 1910.
Alongside its dynamic scientific programme, the 2010 conference will include special centenary events that reflect her contribution to patient care and research, including a special conference student bus arriving at Baltic Square on Gateshead Quays, after completing its tour of universities and hospitals throughout the UK.
NewcastleGateshead and the wider region is set to benefit to the tune of £700,000 from the conference, with local businesses, hotels, restaurants and transport providers all seeing a boost from the hundreds of delegates descending on the destination experiencing the programme of events planned for the three-day event.
Gill Pilkington, NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau Conference Development Manager, said: “To attract these delegates and influencers from across the world is a great coup and we are confident they will find our beautiful ‘twin cities’ an inspiring and welcoming conference destination.”
