Late night event returns

A MAJOR North East cultural event returns to the region this weekend, giving thousands of late night revellers after-dark access to some of Tyneside’s most popular venues.

Over 35 locations between Newcastle and Gateshead will open their doors after hours and Nocturnal culture-lovers can warm up their weekend with an evening of events in the Ouseburn Valley starting tonight.

With outdoor projections, pottery demonstrations, performance poetry, live music, printmaking, underground tours and brand new exhibitions on the line up, project director Bill Griffiths has predicted this will be the most popular weekend of late shows yet.

He said: “It’s great to see people coming to Newcastle and Gateshead to experience our vibrant cultural scene and to see people going places they wouldn’t normally go, like some of our smaller less well known venues.

The Late Shows was the UK’s first Museums at night event to link venues across a city and it is still the largest. We started in 2007 with 11 venues and attracted 4,500 visitors. Last year we had 29 venues and over 15,000 visitors came out to experience The Late Shows, so we’re excited about what the event this year will bring.“

This year visitors will witness a Twilight saga themed evening at Seven Stories and can attend the fake funeral of fictional characters such as Darth Vader or Kathy and Heathcliffe from Wuthering Heights in the black comedy production, The Dead that Never Lived, at The Lit & Phil.

Vane is inviting visitors to up the tempo and bring their favorite records along to a nostalgic amateur disco, Discovery Museum is going retro with over-sized 80s games such as Operation, Twister and an eight track Scalextric and visitors can explore the Gateshead Old Town Hall from the prison cells to the concert hall.
