Director ready to soar
The new director of Durham Tees Valley airport has said the sky’s the limit for his new employer, after his appointment was confirmed last week.
Having filled the seat left by former director Kerry Quinn, Mike Morton has predicted a bright future for the airport, and has said he wants to build on his predecessor’s work by involving the local business community in his new vision.
He said: “Nobody can pretend that everything in the garden is rosy for regional airports, but I do believe that there are real grounds for optimism at Durham Tees Valley.
“In recent months we have been able to attract new scheduled services to Southampton and Dublin, together with increases in our summer holiday programme.
“What I’ve realised already is that one of Durham Tees Valley’s great strengths is the remarkable pride which all sections of the community feel about their local airport.”
With 14 years experience in the airports industry – having previously worked as a mining engineer— Mr Morton will become director at both Durham Tees Valley and Doncaster Sheffield Airport where he has been in charge for the past two years, a move which he says is a natural development of the Peel Airports group structure.
Mike Morton’s appointment has been warmly received by Hugh Lang, group airports director for Peel, who is hopeful the new appointment will bring drive and enthusiasm to the organisation.
Mr Lang added: “We recognise that the airport is a key player in the regeneration of the Tees Valley and the wider region and, under Mike’s leadership, I am sure we can move forward and show that this is a business which everyone involved, staff, passengers, partner airlines, operators and stakeholders, can feel proud of.”
