BT masterplan underway
WORK is underway on a £10.5m office project which will house 500 professional staff as part of plans to regenerate South Shields riverside.
South Tyneside Council is developing the offices on the riverside site at Harton Staithes for BT, which has already signed a long-term agreement to occupy the 43,000 sq ft building.
The centre will provide space for new cafés and restaurants and is expected to act as a catalyst fpr further investment into the surrounding area.
Coun Iain Malcolm said: “We believe BT’s presence will act as a catalyst for further development, because the presence of such a prestigious name will help us to attract other businesses who want to be a part of South Tyneside’s exciting future.
“The business centre will also bring more people into South Shields town centre, providing a boost for local businesses, while many other local companies will benefit from BT’s arrival, with new supply contracts for goods and services.”
Margie Burdis, chief executive of BT South Tyneside, said: “Along with the establishment of a new BT HR service centre, with 75 high-quality jobs in the borough, this is tremendous news for South Tyneside and puts BT on track to fulfil our regeneration commitments.”
South Tyneside Council acquired the site from One North East, which owns the rest of Harton Staithes.
