Students urged to spend a Deloitte-ful summer in finance

BUSINESS advisory group Deloitte has begun recruiting undergraduates to take part in its summer vacation scheme in the North East.

The seven-week programme offers students in their penultimate year of university paid work experience in Deloitte’s audit, tax or consulting service lines.

The programme exposes participants to clients and client work, and encourages them to contribute solutions to every-day client problems. Training is an important part of the scheme to enable students to gain the most from their time on the programme.

Paul Williamson, senior partner at Deloitte in Newcastle, said: “The scheme has been designed to help Deloitte secure top talent and it enables us to target these people at an earlier stage. This scheme is a great opportunity for students to learn valuable business skills in a corporate environment and earn some money to use in their final year at university.”

The scheme has been an active programme at Deloitte for 10 years, providing high quality work experience to undergraduates. Unlike some work experience placements, the Summer Vacation Scheme is a paid work experience at a competitive rate, 85% of a typical Deloitte graduate salary.

Mr Williamson added: “Intake numbers for the scheme have remained consistent throughout the economic downturn as we continue our investment in talent for the future. We will again take on around 150 students next year on a national level, for which we have now started recruiting.”

The retention rate of participants of the scheme to join Deloitte’s graduate programme is high. Over the past four years, more than 80% of those that have taken part in the scheme have been offered graduate positions at the end of their placements.
