Wall to play for this Bank Holiday
ENGLISH HERITAGE sites will provide a welcome break for cyclists at its Hadrian’s Wall sites this August Bank Holiday.
Chesters, Housesteads and Birdoswald Roman Forts are providing cyclist emergency kits to cyclists as well as free ‘refresh and rescue’ kits from Saturday 27 until Monday 30 August to all visitors.
Kits include energy tablets, puncture kits, basic first aid equipment, mini pumps, tyre levers and mini tool kits – everything an amateur or professional cyclist needs to ensure their ride goes smoothly.
All of English Heritage’s Hadrian’s Wall sites have cycle racks to store visitor’s bikes safely whilst they take a break and enjoy the exceptional Roman Fort settings.
With a packed events programme over the bank holiday, English Heritage is keen for all visitors to enjoy themselves at the Roman Festival events across all three sites in the North East and Cumbria without any minor bumps in the road or small mishaps getting in their way.
Jon Hogan, events manager at English Heritage, said: “The August bank holiday is always a busy time for all of sites, but the Hadrian’s Wall cycle route ensures it’s a popular destination for all visitors.
“We want everyone to have a fantastic day out and we hope that the refresh and rescue kits will help cyclists make the most of the bank holiday and encourage them to stop by and pay us a visit.”
If visitors want to take a break from riding, they can be transported back to the conquest of Britain in the 1st Century AD, whether they choose to take a moment to relax and enjoy horseback demonstrations or be put through their paces at The Cavalry Fort event at Chesters Roman Fort (29 & 30 August).
For the more energetic visitors, the Roman Soldier & Gladiator School offers the chance to experience Roman army life and take part in military drills and gladiator training at Birdoswald Roman Fort on 29 & 30 August. Visitors can reward their efforts with ice cold drinks and homemade locally produced cakes.
