North East store manager gets top marks

THE MANAGER of the North East’s largest Tesco store has been named one of the UK’s top supermarket bosses.

Marc Smith, who has worked for Tesco for since 1988 and now manages the Kingston Park store, was awarded third place in the “store manager of the year” category at the prestigious Grocer Gold Awards 2010.

He said: “It was a great honour to be nominated and to reach the final stages of the competition, and I felt very proud to represent the North East against store managers from across the UK.”

The managers were shortlisted after a mystery shopper visited the store to judge the overall shopping experience.

The Kingston Park store was deemed to have an excellent range of products and exceptionally helpful staff which made the shopping experience a pleasant one for customers.

Tesco was also named “Britain’s Favourite Supermarket 2010” at the awards for the sixth year running. Based on a sample of 4,534 consumers across the country, Tesco came out top in terms of customer service, the strength of its promotions, product range and overall shopping experience.

Doug Wilson, Tesco corporate affairs added, said: “We are very proud of Marc for representing Tesco in the final and think he did a fantastic job.

“Marc is very engaged with the staff at the Kingston Park store and always joins in with fundraising to give back to the community. It’s great that the high staff morale contributes to a great atmosphere in the store and a satisfying shopping experience for our customers.”
