Building a solid future
DESPITE a turbulent housing market and the threat of public sector cuts, a building contractor expects to increase turnover and its workforce by 15% by sourcing new opportunities outside of the region.
Wylde Homes, the specialist home building division of Turney Wylde Construction Limited, endured a difficult start to the year when it was forced to make six redundancies.
But with a series of new contracts and a new division of the business in the pipeline, the future is looking brighter for a company which has been around for more than forty years.
Managing Director David Wylde said: “We work for public sector organisations as well as private ventures and the first half of the year has been difficult, things were extremely tight and some redundancies had to be made.
“Things are starting to progress quite nicely now though and the rest of the year looks good. We have a healthy audit book.
“We’re increasing our portfolio and geographical area. Traditionally, we’ve stayed within 50 miles of Newcastle but we’ve picked up a contract which will take us down to Hull.”
The project in Yorkshire will see the company carry our major repair pair work for properties owned by The Coal Authority, bringing in an estimated £1.5m over three years.
Wylde Homes will also start two new schemes with Your Homes Newcastle, build a new school in Northumberland and launch a whole new division within the firm.
Mr Wylde added: “We’ll create the new section of the business inside 18 months.
“Rather than just repairing or creating a building we’ll also take on board additional tasks like ground maintenance and cleaning operations. We’ll manage properties rather than just taking on building work.”
