Electric vehicles movement gathers pace

ELECTRIC vehicles are moving into the fast lane in the North East with the launch of the first customer support scheme for drivers.

One North East has appointed Elektromotive to create the ‘Charge Your Car’ scheme which will help drivers find and use charge points, access customer support and collect information on their vehicle’s charging history.

The announcement was made at the Cenex LCV 2010 event – the national showcase event for the low carbon vehicles sector.

‘Charge Your Car’ will also be the new name for the North East’s Plugged-In Places project. This new customer support scheme will go live on October 1 and will also manage access to the public access charging points which are currently being installed in the North East.

Drivers will register with the website www.chargeyourcar.org.uk to receive a welcome pack which will include their personal electronic tag for opening and using charge posts all around the region, and give them access to free parking whilst charging.

The website will also provide information on charging point locations, journey planning and links to the Switch EV vehicle trial. Drivers registered on the site will be able to access telephone support and information related to their vehicle’s charging history, post use, electricity consumption and post health.

The scheme is being delivered by Elektromotive, which was previously appointed to supply the latest wave of 200 charging points which are being installed in the North East as part of the 1,300 charging points being installed over the next three years. The North East is at the forefront of low carbon vehicle development, and continues to provide the UK with its blueprint for charging infrastructure.

Calvey Taylor-Haw, Elektromotive managing director, said: “Whilst many people are still talking about it, Elektromotive and One North East are doing it. Combining our experience and leading edge technology and the North East region’s drive and vision, we are creating an EV recharging infrastructure, with a fully integrated “back office” management suit that will be a showcase for the world.”
