Experts look to the future

A MAJOR debate taking place this week will see some the country’s most forward thinking science and technology experts gather in the region.

Newcastle’s Centre for Life, home to the team of scientists who cloned the world’s first human embryo, is to host a debate asking where science will take us in the next ten years.

The event, entitled: ’Science: Where in the next ten years?’ will be chaired by Quentin Cooper, described by The Times as “an expert on everything from pop music to astrophysics”.

Panellists include Sir Mark Walport, director of The Wellcome Trust, science author and former Northern Rock chairman, Dr Matt Ridley and technology critic, Bill Thompson.

Also in attendance will be Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino, CEO and Founder of Tinker, a design company which designs products that bridge the digital to the physical for technology companies.

Linda Conlon, chief executive at the Centre for Life, said: “We’re celebrating our 10th year here at Life, looking back at the last ten years; the pace of change in the field of science has been fast with new discoveries and developments being announced almost daily. Some of the most significant developments have happened right here in Newcastle, such as the announcement in 2005 that a team of scientists based at Life had successfully cloned a human embryo – a world first.”
