Major plant expansion at Berwick food company
A North East cereals processor is set to create six new jobs and complete a £1M extension of its production and storage facilities thanks to new backing.
The £1,175,000 upgrade is being launched this autumn by family-business Silvery Tweeds Cereals Ltd, based in Berwick - thanks to a backing from the agribusiness team at Yorkshire Bank Newcastle Financial Solutions Centre (FSC).
Based at Tweedside Trading Estate, the new state-of-the-art extension and upgrade, which will create six new jobs and protect others, will comprise a palletised storage warehouse, a new weighbridge, grain silos, a grain intake system, a waste collection facility and an upgrade of the company’s cereal cooking plant.
Managing director, Bob Gladstone, said: “This extension will quickly enable us to show significant savings by storing in-house rather than using external contractors where, at its peak, our spend has been up to £220,000 a year.
“It will also enable us to reduce vehicle movements and cut down on food miles. We will be able to extend our services by providing storage facilities for our customers, which was previously not possible, as well as holding more stocks of finished products to create a more efficient service.”
Yorkshire Bank’s Newcastle FSC, based on the Quayside, covers the whole of the North East and employs 41 people.
Yorkshire Bank Newcastle-based agribusiness partner, David Oliver, said: “Silvery Tweeds Cereals Ltd, has a tremendous record for innovation and we are pleased to be supporting the company.
“Yorkshire Bank has an additional £1bn to lend to North East businesses in the next 12 months as part of our Investing for Growth initiative and we are committed to ensuring that this reaches the right enterprises.”
