Gentoo reduces Carbon footprint by 42%
SUNDERLAND people and property business Gentoo has reduced its carbon footprint by 42% since it was last measured in 2007, reducing its carbon emissions from 65,535 tonnes to 38,048 tonnes of CO2.
In June 2010 Gentoo commissioned an external firm, Bureau Veritas, to assess the level of CO2 emissions on its business operations for 2009/10.
Their aim was to determine if Gentoo had been successful in reducing the carbon intensity of its business operations since the last full carbon footprint calculation was completed in 2006/07.
The carbon footprint for Gentoo, which includes CO2 emissions from energy, transport and goods and services for 2009/10 has been estimated at 38,048 tonnes of CO2.
John Craggs, Deputy Chief Executive of Gentoo, said: “This total footprint value implies that through hard work and dedication we have achieved a 42% reduction in overall absolute CO2 emissions per annum since 2006/07.
“This is a terrific result for the Group and all our staff should be congratulated for helping to achieve this very sizable reduction. We look forward to continuing to reduce our impact on the planet and continuing to help shape a greener future.”
Key improvements over the last year which have helped achieve this reduction are more effective waste management, increasing recycling up to 90% on some sites, improved use of raw construction materials and energy efficiencies across the Group’s sites and offices.
Based on this experience, Gentoo now offer a range of consultancy services designed to assist and support organisations through the challenges and opportunities of being environmentally sustainable, including waste management consultancy.
