North Shields heritage site under the spotlight
A LOCAL Authority is calling on the public to voice their views on one of North Tyneside’s heritage areas.
Camp Terrace conservation area in North Shields has undergone a draft character appraisal to help guide future development in the area.
The appraisal describes the history of the area and points out architectural and planning fine points and the council aims to keep any new regeneration in keeping with the areas surroundings.
Jeanette Hedley, North Tyneside Council Senior Communications Officer, said: “The aim is not to prevent development in this area of special architectural and historic interest, but to manage change and control the way new development and investment reflects the character of their surroundings.”
Camp Terrace conservation area was designated in July 1975 and saw an extension in November 2009 to include further surrounding areas of architectural and historical quality.
It is based on some of the earliest residential streets of North Shields’ suburban growth to the north of its Georgian new town.
The public are being asked for their views on the appraisal and all responses will be presented to council Cabinet and be considered in the preparation of the final draft.
