North East abattoir takes on the red meat sector
A NORTHUMBERLAND abattoir plans to bolster its workforce with 5 new staff and cement its position in the red meat sector having received an injection of £200,000.
Burradon abattoir Linden Foods, in Northumberland, will use the money to ensure the North East will get its first fully EU accredited abattoir, strengthening the region’s red meat supply chain.
One North East’s Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE), who approved the funding, said the cash injection will help address potential market failures in the North East’s region’s red meat supply.
Adrian Sherwood, RDPE Manager at One North East, said: “In recent decades larger processors have migrated away from the North East, leaving the region with only a handful of small players.
“It is therefore crucial to the future of the region’s livestock production and meat processing sector that abattoirs have the best infrastructure to provide the high value markets for the livestock produced in the region.”
The company, which currently employs 44 people believe that the investment will help the site be more environmentally friendly while also benefiting the quality of the end product.
David Bradford, financial controller at Linden Foods, added: “This investment from RDPE is essential for the business to move forward in a sustainable way by increasing our efficiency and raising standards to the level required by our customers.”
