Sports injury clinic bids for a taste of the Caribbean

SUNDERLAND could be enjoying a taste of the Caribbean if a bid to promote the city as a pre-Olympic training venue succeeds.

A delegation from the city is heading to the House of Lords on Wednesday tomorrow to take part in an event to highlight Sunderland’s sporting facilities to the Grenadian Olympic Team.

The event has been organised by WINDREF (Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation), the research institute at St George’s University, Grenada, and will bring together sporting and academic bodies with potential partners in the West Indies.

The city’s ability to provide world-class expertise in the field of sports injury is considered a major selling point when attracting foreign national teams prior to Olympic and Commonwealth games.

This will be highlighted by experts from The Performance Clinic, which is based at the CitySpace building at the University of Sunderland.

The clinic’s recent recruit Gareth Ziyambi, who is lead physiotherapist for British diving and helped diving sensation Tom Daley rise to Commonwealth success, will work with manager Penny Macutkiewicz to highlight the expertise available in the city.

She said: “Gareth and I will be on hand to explain the world-class sporting facilities and support that are available in the city and to strengthen Sunderland’s bid to attract the Grenadian team to use Sunderland for training prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games.”

The Performance Clinic, which boasts some of the best names in physiotherapy, performance psychology, dietetics and other related therapies, is also aiming to help attract British national teams to relocate to the region.

The clinic opened in September last year and now works with Northumbria University’s super league and first teams with the aim of opening the clinic doors to all members of the public in January 20011.
