Infamous Newcastle banker returns to the region
A MAJOR financial figurehead will be in the region to share some of the tricks that allowed him to establish the first retail bank in Britain in 150 years.
Co- founder of Metrobank, Anthony Thomson, will bring his no-nonsense style to the Entrepreneurs’ Forum open event on November 30.
The Newcastle born banker will discuss the highs and lows of business, from starting up the largest financial services marketing and communications group in Europe to his latest £75m project.
Anthony Thomson, said: “The banking environment was fundamentally changed following the credit crunch and we have seen seismic changes in the retail UK banking industry as a result.
“With the Financial Services Authority’s authorisation of Metro Bank we are entering a new era of banking, one where we go back to a more traditional banking model where customer service is key.”
Mr Thomson founded Metro Bank with Vernon Hill who started Commerce Bank in Philadelphia in 1973 and grew it to a $50bn company with more than 500 sites throughout the east coast of America.
As well as being chairman of Metro Bank, Mr Thomson also chairs the Financial Services Forum and is a non-executive director of marketing group and part of Chime plc, Teamspirit.
