Home is where the art is

IN A BID to foster ties with the community, the Tyne and Wear Metro this week launched a train featuring the work of the region’s budding artists.

The work was created by renowned Northumberland artist, Alexander Millar, and showcases life in North East England.

Millar’s work for the Metro features ‘the gadgie’ - a word used in the North East of England - which Millar feels aptly describes “local characters” and working men of the region synonymous with old heavy industries such as shipping, mining and steel.

The art celebrates the heart and soul of the North East, and the people that make it a great place to live, work and play.

Richard McClean, Managing Director of DB Regio Tyne and Wear operator Metro on behalf of Nexus, said: “The launch is a great occasion for the people in the region, and especially those involved in the Alexander Millar train art.

“Not only will some of the proceeds go to the Bubble Foundation charity but people can take pride in the fact that they are from the North East and see the art as an appreciation of their heritage and lives here.”

According to Nexus, the artwork marks the first of a number of initiatives that Metro will be involved in over the coming years.

The transport firm said it will be working closely with schools, colleges, businesses, charities and not for profit organisations to provide opportunities to those across Tyne and Wear.
