NFM and Northern Star sign for United

A FEATURE length drama that will be shot almost entirely in the North East is to benefit from £150,000 worth of funding.

Unite, a BBC drama, focuses on the Busby Babes and the 1958 Munich disaster in which 22 lost their lives including 8 of the team, coaching staff, supporters, journalists and embassy workers.

It is the latest project to receive investment from the £2.4m Finance for Business North East Creative Content Fund.

Marion Bernard, CEO, Northstar Ventures, said: “We are thrilled to back United’s development, and our investment demonstrates our confidence in the company’s talent, expertise and commercial potential.

“United will help to showcase the North East as a fantastic and versatile location for high quality productions.”

The film will be shot almost entirely in the region home of Bobby Charlton, youngest of the Babes, who went on to become a hero of England’s 1966 World Cup victory.

Charlton, a central character in the film, was born into a mining family in Ashington, and represented Northumberland Under14s before being signed by Manchester United.

The producers are hoping to takes advantage of the wide range of locations available in the region, faithfully recreating Manchester, Munich and Northumberland as they appeared in 1958.

Tom Harvey, CEO, Northern Film & Media, added: “Northern Film & Media is delighted to invest in and host the production of this tragic, quintessentially northern story. Featuring a fine cast and a strong script, the film will educate and entertain audiences across the globe.”
