BT provides multi-million boost for region’s economy

BT generated £250 million for the Tyne and Wear economy last year, a study has claimed.

The research, carried out by DTZ Consulting, also suggests that the communications company supports more than 5500 jobs in the area through direct employment and expenditure with contractors and suppliers.

For Tyne and Wear, the BT Gross Value Added (GVA) totaled £250 million. BT reportedly boosted the North East economy as a whole by £506 million.

Chris Sayers, BT’s regional director for the North East, said: “BT contributes some very big numbers to the North East’s bottom line. These latest figures confirm the unique and vital role the company plays in the prosperity and well-being of the region.

“Every local authority area and every part of society benefit from our day-to-day activities and our commitment to be at the heart of every community. BT people in Tyne and Wear and across the region have a genuine desire to make a positive contribution to their society.

“It is vital as a business that we continue to grow and help our customers, stakeholders and employees to thrive as we work together to create a more prosperous North East.”
