Date set for multi-million leisure revamp opening

The date for the reopening of Dunston Leisure Centre following its multimillion pound redevelopment has been set as work enters the final stages.

Monday April 11 has been confirmed as the date when the leisure centre’s brand new gym and transformed swimming pools will be reopened to the public after its 12 month refurbishment.

The large state-of-the-art gym and two studios, one including the latest interactive technology, is being created alongside improved swimming pools, steam room, sauna and squash court access.

The changing rooms are also being totally transformed as is the leisure centre’s entrance.

Gateshead Council Cabinet member for culture Cllr Linda Green believes that leisure centre customers will really appreciate the difference. “The building itself may have its routes in the sixties but you’d barely believe it.

“Absolutely everything is geared up towards an active and healthy future in the 21st century.

“This investment is providing really first class facilities for local people as well as a great base for competitive swimming in the borough as a whole.”

The most challenging of three rebuilding schemes taking place as part of Gateshead Council’s £36m investment in leisure facilities, Dunston Leisure Centre is also set to continue to be a favourite with a variety of clubs from synchronised swimmers to sub-aqua fans.
