Electrifying contract for Blyth firm

A NORTHUMBERLAND company has won a major contract with a firm that supplies electricity to millions of homes across the country.

Energy giant CE Electric UK will start installing specialist equipment supplied by Blyth-based Applied Superconductor Ltd on its distribution network this year.

Applied Superconductor Ltd (ASL) chief executive Herbert Piereder said: “We believe this order, from such a prestigious company, is the start of exciting times for us.”

“It is a big task to reduce our dependency on oil, gas and coal and, at the same time, cut the CO2 emissions that come with these traditional energy sources. That’s where ASL can step in.”

The company has developed technology known as superconducting fault current limiters which enable the supply of electricity to homes and businesses to be maintained safely and efficiently even if there is a fault on the network.

Mr Piereder added: “You just have to look around the North East to see the rapid growth of renewable energy sources and because of government targets to reduce carbon emissions this will increase.

“In this region Narec in Blyth has been at the forefront of this new technology, which is why set up our base here.”
