Stockton Council unveil ambitious £20m town centre regeneration
Stockton Council last week launched ambitious plans to give the town centre a £20m facelift.
As part of a five-year plan they hope this will help transform the High Street and attract more retailers, businesses and shoppers to the town.
The council said it is looking to revive the fortunes of the famous High Street with a series of major regeneration schemes.
These will include opening up new spaces and links to the river for shoppers, providing easier access and parking.
Councillor Bob Cook, cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: “This is a major commitment from the Council and a recognition that something bold, brave and new has to be done to transform Stockton High Street.
“The regeneration prospectus sets out how we intend to do that and make Stockton High Street a more unique and inviting place to come to shop, to eat, to relax and be entertained, all year round.”
The prospectus also outlines multi-million pound initiatives to further develop the Castlegate Shopping Centre .
These developments include refurbishment of the Market Hall and revitalisation of both its High Street façade and Riverside Road elevation.
John Clift, centre manager at Castlegate, said: “For the High Street to move forward and improve its future prospects it needs businesses, developers and the council to work together towards a single vision. This document provides that vision.”
