North East firms work together for growth
A County Durham company has switched manufacturing of one of its product to a Northumberland firm which has helped to both create and secure jobs at the plant.
The move by Ameeca Ltd to manufacture its StoryPhones product, an MP3 system for classrooms – has helped to secure 22 jobs and create 4 more at Cramlington-based electronics manufacturing firm Opsol UK.
Designed and developed in the region, the system has become a hit in classrooms across the UK and last year helped Ameeca’s turnover exceed £1M.
Malcolm Humble, managing director of Opsol UK, said, “We invested £350,000 on the new manufacturing line so that we could increase our capacity to handle large orders such as this from Ameeca.
“The decision to use Opsol has meant that we were able to recruit new people to work on the product line, and we are delighted to be able to work with Ameeca.”
“ By both companies working together, we want to show that the region has a strong business community.“
Ameeca has been rapidly growing on the back of the success of its award-winning StoryPhones system, which uses MP3 technology in virtually unbreakable headsets for children.
Bosses are now drawing up plans to increase exports of StoryPhones, which are already sold in eight countries, including Norway and Australia.
