Cleaning giant to axe 321 North East jobs

Cleaning products firm Reckitt Benckiser has reportedly announced plans to close its factory in Peterlee with the loss of 321 jobs.

The firm said a review had been completed and that it could absorb Peterlee’s production capacity at its other factories.

The company said it had invested £100m in three factories at Nottingham, Hull and Derby over the past five years.

The factory in County Durham currently produces over the counter medicines, such as Meltus, Remegel and Cuprofen.

Reckitt Benckiser makes products such as Dettol, Clearasil and Gaviscon and employs 25,000 across the globe.

If the factory closure goes ahead the Peterlee site would cease operations in 2014.
