Event highlights importance of sustainability
A major new initiative to encourage businesses to be more sustainable, has been launched by a North East university.
The 2011 Business of Sustainability Week has been launched today by Newcastle University Business School.
The event, which runs from today to 17 June, seeks to promote the idea of sustainability in as a long-term imperative for businesses, suppliers and customers.
An investment of £90,000 from Santander into the project will bring together experts from the Centre for Knowledge, Innovation, Technology and Enterprise (KITE) and the Accountancy, Governance, Ethics and Sustainability Research Group from Newcastle University Business School.
These groups will work together to research how to combine progress and economic growth with an intelligent use of resources to protect the welfare of future generations.
Professor Paul Younger, director of the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability says: “Sustainability is a key challenge facing today’s society and we have world-leading work in sustainability across a range of disciplines.”
“This investment from Santander has already catalysed further investment has already catalysed further investment by other leading organisations and the Business of Sustainability week has an important role to play in increasing debate and sharing of best practice.”
The week will include an event on sustainable design, seminars, a panel debate and consideration of business opportunities from a low carbon economy.
