Public lecture to expose secrets of the universe.
A free lecture at Sunderland University is aiming to expose the public to the secrets of the universe later this month.
Dr Peter Edwards from Durham University’s physics department decided to host the event, entitled “The Big Bang Machine”, as part of an annual community lecture series.
As part of his talk, Dr Edwards will inform the public about CERN, the worlds largest particle physics laboratory and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), designed to simulate the early universe.
Dr Edwards explains: “Using the LHC we hope to travel back to the Big Bang, create mini black holes and reveal the nature of the dark side of the universe.”
“I hope members of the public will join us to explore the immense scale of the experiment, find out how the LHC works, and ponder some of the big questions it will address.”
Dr Edwards is no stranger to this type of event, after touring the country in 2006 with the Institute of Physics Schools’ Lecture “Gravity, Gas and Stardust’ and provides regular talks for the Science Events for Schools Programme of the Royal Institution.
The lecture is free and will be held in the Sir Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre, Prospect Building on June 29.
