Family-run Respite Care centre opens
A respite facility in County Durham has beaten the recession and received its accreditation from the Quality Care Commission.
Co-Ordinated Support was set up by Sharon Showler, an already an experienced carer. Sharon aimed to change the way respite care was delivered by focussing on the needs of each individual who comes to the centre, and providing them with a complete holiday experience.
After securing ‘Be Enterprising’ funding, Sharon was able to train her team and gain the required CQC qualification.
Sharon said: “Our aim is to provide a relaxing, fun, welcoming service which provides a professional and supportive environment to enable individuals to achieve their aspirations and goals.”
Adults with learning and behavioural difficulties can stay at the facility from one night up to two weeks, giving them the opportunity to make new friends as well as giving families and carers a break.
The centre also uses a key worker system, whereby guests are individually supported to ensure their needs are met. Co-Ordinated support also provides Emergency placements and activity days out for residents.
Michael Harriott, Sharon’s Be Enterprising coach said: “Sharon’s determination to change the way respite is delivered is really inspirational.
“She is so passionate and motivated that she has been able to overcome several barriers to start her business.”
