New app brings history to life

A North East entrepreneur has launched an innovative new app, which will allow iphone, and ipad users to visit historical sites from the comfort of their own home.

Mark Jackson decided to launch “Pocket Tour”, after a conversation with Dr John Greenacre, a historian and battlefield guide. The project allowed Mark to combine his technical knowledge with Dr Greenacres historical expertise, and the new product now offers users the opportunity to view original photographs, sound clips and film footage of the events as they unfolded.

Mark Jackson said: “Imagine walking over the ground that shaped history alongside an expert who can explain the events as they unfolded.

“The GPS feature guides you from point to point using the knowledge of the historians to make sure you see things from the best vantage points. This makes a tour of the battlefields accessible to anyone, anywhere at any time.”

The application is not Internet dependent either, as once they have downloaded it is available directly on the users phone.

The first tour details the battle of Arnhem, the largest airborne campaign of all time, and has been tried and tested with great success. Mark now hopes to create more applications, including one fur the Battle of the Somme, Battle of Normandy and the Battle of Flodden.

The app will also be used to generate funds for “The Soldiers Charity”, and is available on the website http://www.pocket-tours.co.uk

Chief Executive of The Soldiers Charity General Evelyn Webb-Carter added: “This is cutting edge stuff and is a really fantastic way to study or visit a battlefield.

“It is a most exciting development with huge potential.”
