Premier League spending hits £485 million
While many businesses are feeling the bite of the recession, player transfer spending in the Premier league is bucking the trend.
Spending in this Summer’s transfer window was around £485 million, up £120 million on summer 2010.
While much of the spending was dominated by five main clubs; Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, the figures do demonstrate that UK clubs are prepared to invest to ensure success.
However, it is notable that the Premier League continues to redistribute more venues to overseas clubs through the player transfer market, indicating that these astronomical figures are not always being redistributed back into English football.
Premier League spending was also higher than top division clubs in Italy, Spain and France, though their spending was up by a higher percentage than in England.
Dan Jones, Partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte commented: “Many businesses up and down the country are necessarily taking a prudent approach to their finances as they feel recession bite and reducing expenditure where possible.
“The figures from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group show that Premier League clubs as a whole, continue to be resilient to recessionary pressures and grow their revenues and be in a position to maintain or grow its levels of transfer spending.”
