New round of Public Sector Strikes
Union leaders have announced another round of industrial action over government plans for public sector pensions.
The BBC reports that the action will be a “sustained effort”, and could involve thousands of public sector employees across the UK
As well as several one day national strikes, union leaders have confirmed that there will also be some lasting longer, with a “rolling programme”, implemented in some areas.
Unison, Unite and GMB are believed to be organising a strike ballot over the reforms. Between them they have 1.5 million members.
Many people took part in industrial action earlier in the year over government plans to increase public sector pensions contributions from next April, while millions of workers would concurrently face a pay freeze.
Trade unionists are now planning a fundraising drive to support lower paid union workers who have lost earnings.
However, the moves have come under fire from Mark Littlewood at the Institute for Economic Affairs, who noted that on average, public sector workers are between 35% and 40% richer than the average worker in the private sector.
