Gaming software brings Tyne Tunnel plans to life
An environmental firm taken the unusual step of using gaming software as a consultation tool to develop new transport plans for Tyneside.
SLR Consulting, who are partially based in Newcastle, have used the software to develop virtual reality models of the Tyne pedestrian and cyclist tunnels.
Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority will now use this information to apply for listed building consent for the new tunnels.
The new 3D models will now be published online, allowing stakeholders and the public a first look at the plans. Individuals will also be given the opportunity to comment on and engage with the process.
SLR’s Senior Architectural Visualiser, Robert Myers said: “More people are familiar with using this type of technology in their daily lives and we wanted to integrate it into the consultation process.
“Our system also allows people who are unable to attend consultation meetings the ability to see for real what will be delivered.”
The models will take users along the Grade II listed tunnels and up the timber escalators, allowing viewers to switch between an existing and proposed model.
Project Manager for the Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority, Cliff Jessett, said “The virtual reality model for the Tyne and Wear
Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels is an integral tool within our on-going stakeholder consultation programme, helping us to visualise our plans and communicate with a diverse range of audiences.“
