??Through The Magic Mirror, the World of Anthony Browne - Seven Stories, Ouseburn, Newcastle. Sat Sept 24 and Sun Sept 25.??

Anthony Browne’s first UK exhibition is a colourful display of life size characters from his career as a children’s author, spanning from 1976 to the present day. Expect to see original illustrations from over 30 of his picture book titles including Gorilla, Into the Forest, Zoo, Little Beauty and Willy the Champ. ??Anthony’s background as a medical artist, and then as a greetings card designer makes him one of the most fascinating illustrators. In 2000 he won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his services to children’s literature, and in 2009 he was appointed the new Children’s Laureate until 2011. ??This exhibition invites you to take a look inside Anthony’s family home, where you can meet his Mum and Dad and take a stroll in his back yard, where you might notice strange shapes forming from his book Changes. ?

BBC wildlife presenter, author and accomplished photographer Chris Packham tells tales of his wildlife encounters from around the world, and much closer to home. An impassioned naturalist, Chris brings with him a mesmerising collection of pictures, and a touch of his trademark irreverent humour.

Gary Oldman, John Hurt and Colin Firth star in this film adaptation of John le Carre’s Cold War novel. Oldman plays a disgraced British spy who is coaxed out of semi-retirement by his government to track down a Soviet double agent who they believe has infiltrated the British Secret Service. Director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) has created a cerebral thriller, full of double crosses and sharp intellects. One of the most anticipated films this year. ???

George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 romantic comedy is a sharp comment on the British class system of the day, and also on women’s independence. Professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins, makes a bet that he can train a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party by coaching her in gentility and speech.

Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell ’Kite’ album launch - The Live Theatre, Newcastle. Sun Oct 2. Tickets: £9, £7 concessions. ??

Jonny and Lucy play delicate folk songs that might appeal to fans of Gillian Welch and the Low Anthem. A mix of contemporary and traditional folk, their six-track EP called ‘The North Farm Sessions’ received 4 stars from The Guardian after appearing on tour with The Unthanks and Bellowhead. The pair met at Newcastle University, 6 years ago and have gone on to become what Uncut have called, “folk music’s best kept secret.” ???

??The Wonders of the Invisible World - Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland. Sat Sept 24 and Sun Sept 25.

??A two part exhibition that brings together works by international artists, who explore the areas of human experience that are beyond ready explanation. Artists explore the intangible and mysterious world with suspended disbelief. The exhibition calls for people to view the world holistically, rather than in strict scientific terms. ????
