NewcastleGateshead Art Fair 2011 - The Sage, Gateshead. Sep 30 - Oct 3. Tickets: £6.
Now in it’s fifth year, the NewcastleGateshead Art Fair boasts regional, national and international galleries and artists. Emerging artists nestle alongside established names in what will be vast collection of works, including sale-paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photographs and glass-ranging. Of the works on sale, there will be a selection to suit all budgets, from those under £100 to the several £1000s. This year Palestinian artist Shareef Sarhan brings his work to the Sage, following the success of his ‘Windows from Gaza’ project, founded in 2003. A series of seminars, talks, master-classes, children’s workshops and print-making demonstrations will also take place over the weekend as part of the fair.

Siege and Storm: Civil War in Newcastle. The Discovery Museum, Newcastle. All weekend. Sat 10am-5pm; Sun 2pm-5pm. Admission free.
Discover the story of Newcastle during the 17th century English Civil Wars and explore the opposing sides of Royalist versus Parliament during the siege and storming 1644. Bringing together unique documented stories, along with original objects that represent a divided City. Find out why Charles I was held prisoner here, and what’s behind the motto of the City - Fortiter Defendit Triumphans!
Cinema
Night of The Hunter - The Star and Shadow Cinema, Stepney Bank, Newcastle. Sun Oct 2, 7.30pm.
Charles Laughton’s classic film-noir gets a showing at The Star and Shadow. Robert Mitchum stars as the Reverend Harry Powell, a psychotic serial killer and self-appointed preacher with the words Love and Hate tattooed across is knuckles. After leaving prison Powell goes on a sinister quest to find his dead cell-mates hoarde of money. Mitchum puts in a mesmerisingly and chilling performance. Not for the faint hearted.
Music
Month of Fridays: Let’s Buy Happiness, Fantasy Rainbow and Crooked Hands - The Cluny, Newcastle. Fri Sep 30 8.00pm. Tickets: £5.
One of the most talked about new bands to emerge from the North East, Let’s Buy Happiness have prepped their debut album, and look set to become pop favourites. BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson said: “Let’s Buy Happiness are going to be your favourite new band. Vocalist Sarah Hall’s voice is beautifully tender, quite unlike anything I’ve heard before. Fantasy Rainbow play clever, summery guitar pop and new-comers Crooked Hands have received comparisons to Bon Iver.

The DLI Museums and Durham Art Gallery - Aykley Heads, Durham. All weekend. 10am-5pm. Tickets: adult £3.50; child £1.50, family (2+3) £9.00; under 4s free.
Discover the military museum which tells the story of one of the most famous County Regiments in the British Army. A rich collection of objects including uniforms, decorative silverware, weapons, medals and personal items show the regiment from its 18th Century beginnings through to the Korean war. Experience the ‘dreadful dugout’ first hand and explore the interactive displays.

Penny Dreadful’s Etherdome. Darlington Arts Centre. Fri Sep 30, 8.00pm. Tickets: £11.00.
Directed by Mick Barnfather, the award winning Penny Dreadful are back with an invitation to the Etherdome: a darkly funny disaster-comedy from the start of the scientific age. Enter the world of 1850s American carnival sideshows. Let the Tooth Doctors take you on their quest for pain relief, where major surgery is carried out with only a stiff whiskey. Expect live bluegrass, dentistry and dubious beards. The Scotsman called it: “A piece of macabre cabaret-inspired escapism - suitably gory and unashamedly silly.”
