Medieval Market - Grey’s Monument and Grainger Street, Newcastle. Oct 14-16.
Experience traditional fayre including delicious hog roasts and hearty breads, old English meads and ciders. Each stallholder will be sporting medieval costume, and demonstrations of traditional skills including pottery, spinning and even chicken plucking. Fine jewellery and textiles will be on offer to visitors, as a roaming cast of character will entertain, including musician and town fool Mr Devil Stick. Be careful to have fun though, because those who look like they are not might end up in the stocks, at the mercy of the crowds! You might even be lucky enough to encounter one of the ‘Royals’ who are rumoured to be making an appearance.
Theatre
End of the Rainbow - The Judy Garland Story. Newcastle Theatre Royal. Sat Oct 15.
Award-winning Tracie Bennett has already taken the West End by storm, playing Judy Garland in the story of her 1968 comeback. As she battles drink and drugs the actress and singer is determined to reclaim her crown as the performer of her generation. Directed by Terry Johnson, this dazzling show includes a six-piece on stage band.

Junco Partners - Foyer Bar, Whitley Bay Playhouse. Oct 14. 8.45-10.30. Tickets: £8
Long established North East R’n’B band with an strong local following, bring their rootsy sound to the more intimate surroundings of the foyer bar venue at the Playhouse. Formed in 1964 the Juncos have played alongside the likes of The Who and Rod Stewart, and have garnered a reputation as a classic rhythm and blues outfit. Playing only select gigs these days, this is the perfect opportunity to catch them live.
Museums and Exhibitions
Good Times, Bad Times, All Times Get Over - Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham. Opens Sat Oct 15.
Lovers of art, history and North Eastern community spirit will surely find this latest exhibition fascinating. As part of the International Print Biennale it centres on the wood engravings of Thomas Bewick, the acclaimed eighteenth century artist base in Newcastle and Tyneside. It showcases his famous ‘tale-pieces’ - illustrations of cautionary tales or fables.
Family
Daydreams and Diaries, the story of Jacqueline Wilson - Sevent Stories, Newcastle Ouseburn.
Opens Sat Oct 15. Tickets: adults £6.50; children £5.50; family £19.
This latest exhibition at Seven Stories is centred on multi award-winning author and former Children’s Laureate Dame Jacqueline Wilson, and will display many of her personal belongings including notebooks, typescripts, school reports and diaries. Take the opportunity to discover ‘never seen before’ material from her famous books such as The Story of Tracey Beaker and The Illustrated Mum. The exhibition also showcases the work of illustrator Nick Sharratt, whose drawings have become synonymous with Jacqueline’s characters.
Food and Drink
Wallington Food and Craft Festival - Wallington, Northumberland. Oct 15-16. 10am-5pm.
An event celebrating local suppliers based in Northumbria and Cumbria. Showcasing a huge range of regional produce, with over 60 exhibitors the weekend is sure to boast some delicious treats for visitors. Home-made cakes, biscuits, meat, cheese and sweets will be on offer, along with a wide range of hand-made arts and crafts. As usual, the Wallington house and gardens will be open to the public.
Cinema
Amelie (10th Anniversary showing) - Tyneside Cinema. Sun Oct 16. 3.15.
A celebratory 10th anniversary showing of this cult romantic comedy, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It tells the story of waitress Audrey Tautou who decides to try and change the lives of those around her for the best. Best film at the European Film Awards, four Cesar awards and two BAFTAs mean Amelie is one for fans to enjoy again, and a must for first-timers.
