Shark Club officially opens for business

As Newcastle’s first Gastro Bar prepares for its VIP launch this evening, bdaily has been speaking to the brains behind the Shark Club.

Located on the ground floor of the new Sandman Signature Hotel, the Shark Club is the first UK venture for Canadian Northland Properties.

Mitch Gaglardi, director of Northland Properties said the move to Newcastle was a strategic one, due to a variety of factors the city offered.

“We were looking for a city with a strong population base, with a good tourist and business mix, set against favourable market conditions,” Mitch explained. “Having St James’ Park close by was also a definite draw, as well as being within walking distance of the city centre.”

Mitch also hopes the hotel will appeal to business people visiting the region, and believes the venue is a clear fit for the business professional.

“Sixty percent of our client base is corporate so this is a target market for us. The service we offer is indicative of what a corporate person would expect in this market.”

Laurids Skaarup, president of the Shark Club, echoed his desire to attract corporate clientele.

He added:“ The high end food and beautifully finished environment means we are a clear fit for the business professional.

“There are many people working here, and many more who come here on business, and by offering high quality at comparatively lower prices, we believe we can deliver a great service.”

Now the doors are open, Laurids believes that crowds will come in their droves.

“It’s a gastrobar, which is a phrase of our own invention,” he continues “In Canada, the Shark Club broke the rules – why can’t a sports bar have good service and good food, as well as being a good place to watch the game?
