Turner Prize exhibition unveiled
Excitement is brewing at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts, as the venue plays host to the prestigious Turner Prize 2011.
It is the first time that the exhibition has been held outside of a Tate Venue, and only the second time it has ventured outside of London.
This year’s exhibition features work by four shortlisted artists: Karla Black, Martin Boyce, Hilary Lloyd and George Shaw.
This morning Bdaily was one of a lucky few given the opportunity to see the exhibits for the first time. Featuring sculptures, installations and more traditional paintings, whether you are a modern art lover or not each work is certainly a sight to behold.
Chief curator Laurence Sillars believes that the prize will help to reinforce the regions reputation as a centre for artistic excellence.
He commented: “The prestige around the prize is such that it has caught the attention of the international media, so for Gateshead to be in those articles and have its profile raised in that way is fantastic.
“Over the last nine years, the Baltic has really proven itself to be an ambitious, forward thinking venue, confident to deliver projects of all scales that have a regional, national and international reputation, and it’s a huge vote of confidence that we have been chosen to organise the prize.”
The Prize, which was established in 1984 is awarded to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition, and is widely recognised as one of the most important awards for visual arts in Europe.
The winner of the award will be announced on a live broadcast on Channel 4 on 5 December 2011.
