Alex Dawson, CEO of TAG Energy Solutions, and chairman of Energi Coast North East England’s Renewable Group, shares his expertise

Why have you based your landmark new offshore renewables facility in the North East?

The North East is a key strategic location for the offshore renewables sector. In addition to its integrated and technology-driven supply chain, the geographic location of the region gives it a distinct advantage, enabling businesses to quickly and effectively service the majority of the North Sea development zones, including UK Round 3, Scottish Water and German offshore wind development zones

How is the sector thriving in the region?

The strength of the industry within the North East is reflected in the recent launch of Energi Coast, North East England’s Renewables Group. This is a fantastic show of strength from the region, involving 19 members, including some of the region’s leading companies and organisations such as NOF Energy, which represent the interests of many more companies. The level of interest we have received from companies wanting to get on board with Energi Coast has been huge and there is a real zeitgeist in the region, which reflects the buoyancy of an industry which will form a major part of the North East economy for many years and decades to come.

What are the biggest issues with the renewable industry?

The renewable industry has its naysayers and I believe that they have the potential to be the biggest threat to the success of the sector. Energy minister Chris Huhne recently spoke out against these people, which is an excellent show of support from the highest level and gives increased belief that the backing we need to achieve the vast potential for our sector is in place.

What does the future hold for the industry here in the North East?

North East England has the potential to become a global hub for the offshore renewables industry. It is a unique region in terms of geography, experience, infrastructure and technical capabilities.

North East England’s innovative and successful integrated supply chain is technologically-driven and has excellent credentials for delivering large scale projects across the energy sectors.

Having already substantially invested in offshore renewables, the region’s supply chain has signalled its intentions to be a serious player in the global market.

How do you find recruitment for people in the region with the right skills to work in the sector?

At TAG Energy Solutions, we have a workforce comprising skilled workers, many of whom have successfully transferred their skills from more traditional industries. The availability of a willing and skilled workforce is just one more reason why the North East is a prime location for this sector to thrive.

How do organisations find out more about developments in the sector?

The first port of call for information should be the websites of Energi Coast and NOF Energy, www.energicoast.co.uk and www.nofenergy.co.uk.
