Search for National Drug Worker of the Year
The search is on for the national drug worker of the year. The awards, part of the Home Office’s Tackling Drugs Changing Lives campaign, are open to all public and voluntary sector workers in the UK who have taken direct positive action to tackle drug issues in the local community. Two awards are available, one for an individual and one for a team, and each winner will receive £10,000 for their organisation.
Sue Peel, Drugs Team Regional Manager for Government Office for the North East, said: “We know that 9,474 people entered drug treatment programmes in the North East in 2004/5, that young people are benefiting from local services and that drug-related crime in the region is falling. Behind this progress there are many individuals and teams that are making the difference. These awards are about recognising and rewarding the drug worker and drug team that have gone the extra mile to help turn lives around.”
Anyone can make a nomination at http://www.drugs.gov.uk/awards2006. The closing date is the end of March 2006, and the winners will be announced on 23 May - National Tackling Drugs Day.
