Top stories count down of 2011: 15-11

2011 has been an exciting year here at Bdaily, and to celebrate an incredible year of North East news, over the next 3 days we will be counting down some of the biggest stories of 2011. Today we have the best from 15 - 11.

15. The Regional Growth Fund was a major talking point for many in the region, and in April, many of you read about the first round of funding, which promised to create or safeguard over 13,000 jobs.

14. In March, the heartwarming story of James O’Neill touched on the issues of unemployment and entrepreneurship. After he was made redundant, Mr O’Neill decided to set up his own business -taking on two former colleagues and an uncle who had also lost their jobs.

13. In October the Agency Workers Regulations Act 2010 came into force, causing confusion and difficulty for many employers and employees. We spoke to Ian Storer from Core People to find out more.

12. One of the regions most well established brands A&P Tyne celebrated the early completion of their section of the HMS Queen Elizabeth in August. The £55 million order is the biggest warship ever built in the UK, and its construction on the Tyne reminded many of the river’s heyday, when the area teemed with activity.

11. The Southern Cross Care Homes controversy hit headlines nationwide, with the closure and takeover of the group causing uncertainty for both residents and employees.

The purchase of 35 homes by the Maria Mallaband Care Group provided many with some respite, promising to create 2250 jobs in the social care sector to replace the ones which had been lost.
