Top stories of 2011: 5-1

Today is the third and final part of our rundown, detailing the most popular stories in the North East from 5 to 1.

5. In August, the talk of a purchase of Northumbrian Water by a Hong Kong Tycoon caused much controversy. While some welcomed the potential of inward investment into the North East, others were concerned that a new owner from outside the area would not understand the importance of private sector jobs in Durham.

4. Earlier this month, Newcastle was named as one of the UK’s ’Core Cities’, in a move set to give the city more autonomy. However, some worry that this deal could leave the rest of the region out in the cold.

3. In October, the Legal Services Act 2011 came into place, allowing businesses to offer legal services to clients. The so-called ’Tesco Laws’ represented a serious shake-up of the legal profession, and are a source of controversy for many within the legal sector.

2. Cumbrian Seafoods went into administration in early December. This was a disappointment for the company, which was formerly named as one of the UK’s top 250 privately owned company by the Sunday Times, but the sale of the business to Lion Capital secured the jobs of almost 400 people across 3 sites.

1. This years top story was the announcement that Tees Valley Unlimited had been named as one of the Government’s chosen ’Enterprise Zones?. The development will create up to 3000 jobs and should attract massive inward investment to the region.
